SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The police chief of Puerto Rico resigned nearly a year after being appointed to head a unit charged by federal agents of corruption, killings and violations of human rights.
The departure of former general of the National Guard Emilio Diaz Colon comes amid criticism that he did not do enough to combat violence that resulted in 1,100 murders last year.
Governor Luis Fortuno said in a statement late Wednesday that Emilio Diaz Colon had not resigned his leadership that adversely affects the reforms that are underway within the police force.
